This simple craft is so darn rewarding; I'm really getting hooked. First of all, you don't need any actual skill, so that's right up my alley, and secondly, there is lots of joy to be extracted from the whole exercise of picking and matching colors, and then the excitement of seeing how they actually combine and interact in the rug. I love that part.

But you wanna see rugs? Take a look at some Shaker spirit rugs. No flashy colors, no big braids, just tiny, thin braids in greys and browns. But look at what they do with shape and color gradation! It's truly amazing. Here are some samples of Shaker spirit rugs:

Here is a whole page of Shaker goods, from an auction. What is noteable is the beauty and grace infusing ordinary objects like the wooden shovel. Everything was not just made, it was made with utmost attention to doing as good a job as possible, no matter how everyday or humble the product. I really like that ethos and would benefit from following that example more than I do.
