"Christmas Day" is recognized as a federal holiday by the United States government, and as an official state holiday by the State of Michigan. I didn't check, but I'm sure that the City of Mount Pleasant also officially recognizes "Christmas Day" as an official local holiday. They probably even have "Christmas" decorations in City Hall. What loons.

I agree with almost everything you say; Christmas is a secular holiday for the vast majority of people in the US anyway. Something that has never made sense to me, however, are Christians who get upset when department stores have "holiday" sales. Shouldn't they be more offended that their most holy of days is being hijacked to sell material indulgences?

Ha! A Saturnalia ornament! Very cute; thank you, Anisoptera, for the link.

rodneyn: It's silly, indeed. But in all fairness, it's only the school system there that is being so silly.

Mr. C.: Good point; you would think so. "What Would Jesus Buy"?

This is what I call a war on Christmas: "Americas top doc told the Herald yesterday that Santa Claus should slim down, in the latest blow struck in a global politically correct crusade against the jolly fat man." http://bostonherald.com/news/regional/general/view.bg?articleid=1047979&format=text

Lowes was correctly criticized for selling pre-lit family trees in one of their catalogs. They apologized.

Besides, wasn't the practice of decorating conifer trees first a European pagan tradition before it was a Christian tradition?

Steve: Absolutely. To my knowledge. I decorate my big potted hibiscus each year, which is easy, cheap, and of course sustainable. :)
