Me thinks the bicyclists of the nation should be wearin' one o' them big orange flashing lights , on thier heads ,like the street sweepers have , in order for us poor mental midgets out there to distinguish them from the darkness they rides in ...maybe a fully reflective jacket, and a front and rear light ....

timmy says, never ride a bicycle against traffic. Bicycles obey the same laws as cars do on the road. timmy says, share the road.

Pat: Absolutely, the more visually obvious the biker the better. Michigan law specifies you must have a working front white light visible from 500 feet, and one rear red reflector. I personally like those blinking LED rear red blinkey-lights--extremely visible and eye-catching.

TImmy: Absolutely: I got off the bus at St. John's the other day, and was cold and intent on riding home fast, but when given a choice of riding quickly against traffic in the Cross St. bike lane (a very nice, generously wide one) and slowly on a bumpy sidewalk I had to pick sidewalk. Too scary otherwise.

Yes, bikes go by the same laws as cars. I just hate it when I see a biker scooting across a road against the light while all the cars wait patiently. Way to improve the image of bikers, dope.

timmy agrees. timmy's friend just got 2 tickets for running a light and going down a one way street the wrong way in Ann Arbor on his bicycle. timmy said to him, get your check book out.

Hmm, I didn't think about one-ways; that's true, those count too of course. I don't think I've ever heard of a biker getting a ticket, though, much less two--ouch. May I ask, is the fine the same as for cars, I wonder?

timmy was told by his friend, both tickets total just under $300. timmy assumes, the price is the same as a car or very close. timmy was also told the police were really mad at his friend.

Ypsidixit is pleased to find a kind blog-commentor as fond of the third person singular as she is. $300! Yowch! In San Francisco, at least bikers get a bit more of a break:

"On the day we called, a "failure to stop, Stop sign" citation was worth $122.97 for a cyclist violation and $158.97 for a motorist bust. Under state law, localities can set reduced fines for bicycle violations."

FYI, timmy is talking about the intersection stop light in front or at the corner of Sweetwater Cafe in Ann Arbor. timmy's friend was heading west off of Main st; ran that red light, turned left on to the one way, the wrong way toward the Fleetwood Diner.timmy's friend than, jumped the curb and the police caught him going down the hill west toward Seventh a ways up. timmy was told, his friend had no idea the police were on his tail. timmy says "caaaaCHING!" to city of Ann Arbor.

Oh yes, I know that corner; a bad one, like most on Main St.

Some of the AA police are on bikes themselves--really nice ones, black Cannondales. I am certain they observe all traffic laws scrupulously.
