fill the 3 gallon and poor into the 5. fill the 3 gallon again and poor until the five gallon is full. This will leave 1 gallon in the 3 gallon bucket. Empty the 5 gallon bucket poor the gallon from the 3 gallon bucket into the 5 gallon. Fill the 3 gallon bucket again and poor it into the 5 gallon bucket, and you will have 4 gallons.

Well, I have to say I figured you would do this one in record time, Jim...congratulations, and great job! There is another solution, by the way, using the same sort of method...hmm, can anyone think of THAT one?

Fill the five from the pond, then the three from the five, then put the rest on the garden. Repeat.

Ah hah, that is yet another solution. OK, here is another solution:

Fill the 5. Pour the 5 into the 3 until the 3 is full (leaving 2 in the 5). Empty the 3 gallon. Pour remaining 2 gallons into emptied 3 gallon. Refill 5 gallon. Pour into 3 till it's full, leaving (voila!) 4 gallons in the 5.

Phew!
