I don't mean to harp on a topic we're all pretty sick of, but I'm sorry, this is egregious. What's egregious about it is that it treats me as an idiot.

Ypsidixit is capable of making up her own mind, thank you. So is Fritz. We do not need vague alarmism about the cost of home security systems. If you have a valid position, you should be able to say it in specific and concrete terms. Example: "If we don't pass a tax, we will have to change one full-time police officer to a part-time officer." (Just a sample example). Period. Spell it out, and then let me make a decision based on the facts. Not on some alarmist nonsense.

Oh, one more thing. I note that the table of "typical Ypsilanti families" fails to take into account what I and a good number of my married or partnered friends are, which is DINKs. Double Income No Kids. Gay and straight DINKs tend to be professionals and often members of the "creative class." You'd think it's a demographic Ypsi would seek.

As it is, I come away from this table with the impression that the writers are not only woefully behind the times but also exclusionary. And, I'm sorry, just not "with it."

Incidentally, for kind readers on either side of the tax question who wish to show support for our police dept., there's a chili dinner fundraiser at Pub 13 tonight, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.

I've always had reservations when someone starts talking about what is 'typical' or 'normal.' All of the people I know are completely unique and do not fit into an 'average' socket. Such comparisons are then meaningless, yet they are so often used to advance some cause or other.

Absolutely. Though the figures on the flier were being used to illustrate ball park tax figures for the proposed tax. That's fair enough--but why only 1950s style families were represented there does not reflect well on the authors. It made me wish to say, get with it, already.

"Exclusionary"? Get a grip.

How politely said, Scotty--quel gentleman. Take a look, perhaps a long one, at the table before commenting, if you would. Thanks!

What table would this be?

Ypsidixit - 2007-11-09 08:32:54
The one listing families on the flier. But really, Scotty, it is time to move on. This issue divided the community, and it is time to put aside differences and work together towards a better future for Ypsi. The time for rehashing what is now past history is over.
