My neighborhood (Normal Park) has been doing a luminaria night for several years, called the Night of Lights. Last year it was on the second Saturday of December and we even hosted one of the dozen or so cider stops. The YHS Chamber Singers stroll about and sing carols. In some areas of the neighborhood, almost every house had luminarias out; in some areas, it was more spotty (but we do have a vast 700 homes to involve). Last year, we also went to Dexter for the first time ever and saw the luminarias there on Christmas Eve. It was gorgeous and coverage was impressive, but I thought that the NPNA event was much better -- much more neighborly, with many people walking from house to house and enjoying the superb caroling. I think people are just too busy on Christmas Eve -- coming, going, wrapping, entertaining -- to really interact all that much with neighbors via an event like this.

I think you should all join NPNA on the second Saturday -- let's make it citywide!!!

Midtown has also participated with NPNA in the Night of Lights. As for the New Years Jubilee, come on downtown New Year's Eve and let your own light shine as you enjoy great music and ring in the New Year!

Well, I'll be dipped. I never had a clue Normal Park was doing this. I'm a little embarrassed, but heck, at least I learned something. And accumulated one more clue.

Lisele has a good suggestion to make the Second Saturday (December 8, one day before Stuff Your Stocking Night 2007) city-wide. I wonder if the city council can pass a proclamation to that effect, preferably written in antique script on a big parchment scroll that they can unroll, crackling, in chambers. Wouldn't that be cool? Maybe the councilmenber suggesting the idea can dress up in a Dickensian costume for extra Christmasy goodness.

That's my suggestion. Seriously, Lisa, I love your idea for a Citywide Night of Lights Dec. 8!
