I thought Google owned Orkut, years and years ago when Orkut was popular.

They do. Google actually pays its people to fiddle around, on company time, with promising ideas...and one of these became Orkut. Named for the first name of its Turkish inventor. No one I know uses it--but they have 67,000,000 members.

Heh. One kind reader just sent me a "friends" request from Tagged. My goodness, there are more of these social networking sites than one can shake a stick at!

Ypsidixit is proud to report to kind readers that she is now a full-fledged (well, fledgling) member of Tagged and I already have 2 friends! I can see right now that this could absorb enormous amounts of time...but it's fun. My first social network! (Loftily) No Facebook for me, thank you kindly. Ha!

Esther Dyson is a well-regarded venture capitalist noted for spotting trends in emergin technologies. On a recent Charlie Rose show (segment available online at http://www.charlierose.com/shows/2007/08/14/2/a-discussion-about-emerging-technologies-with-esther-dyson ) she says that FaceBook is the new Google and Google is the new Microsoft. Her case is very convincing.

WOW, was that interesting! I was rapt the whole show. Thank you, Teaspout! That's the best TV show I've seen in a LONG time.

From the genome to the lack of wrinkles in space to Google...just fascinating. It was so good I was scribbling down quotes:

"Yahoo should have become Facebook."

On self-aware machines: "Even if we get [them], will we know?

"If Google was self-aware, what would it say? Will they tell us?"

OK, I can see right now that I'm gonna spend the post-dinner time searching for more Charlie Rose shows. I never saw one before. I love the format: inky black, with just 2 people talking about ideas. Just marvelous.

Great stuff! Thank you, Teaspout! You are right--she was indeed convincing.

(checks Tagged) Y. notes that she still has 2 Tagged friends. That's good. (Decides) I think I'll keep it at 2, that's a manageable number. Don't want to spread myself too thin, now. And it's more exclusive this way, yes.
