Oh my God. That's me!!! And then of course, I scream gentrification if I can't get my injera and Ethiopian beef stew for under $5.

Absolutely. Me too. Or how about being served pad thai made with lemon juice instead of tamarind juice? (delicate shudder).

It's a frightening thought. On a lighter note, F. and I tried out Banh Na last night on Washtenaw, to celebrate the finishing of a computer class he just taught. Thai and Laotian dishes. It was wonderful, sepulchral dining-room light in converted A&W shack (?) notwithstanding. I had a chili-coconut-catfish dish & F. had pork with curry, potatoes, and apples. Also Tom Yum soup. The flavors were unlike those of any cuisine I'd tried before, and a flavor and aroma like rosewater seemed to permeate the soup spoon, immaculate linen napkin, and food; it was a sort of flowery aftertaste long after we got home. Very good food! In the tiny dining space, there were 4 couples...on a rainy, dark Wednesday night. Hmm...seems it has its loyal customers.

I love Banh Na!! My husband hates it, though he doesn't know why.

The food was outstanding. We didn't know what to expect from such an unprepossessing place. Odd lighting. But they took great care in cooking wonderful food, and there were many nice touches: fragrant, fine linen napkin, seafood dish served on cockleshell-shaped plate. It was very good.
