As usual, you are awesome. An event to attend.

maryd, you are too kind...it's just one more in the long line of really terrific, home-grown events that the CB has helped make possible by kindly offering their space.

It's interesting that listing this event made me realize how squeamish about death American culture generally is.

For example, when listing the title to this post, "Beer for the Dead," I worried that a reader might think I was being inappropriate or in bad taste.

Then I read the linked page about the ofrendas. I thought how beautiful and appropriate such a custom seemed to me--and I thought of the horror most people I know would regard such an altar, in their homes. "Ghoulish. Ridiculously sentimental. Halloweenish." When actually, it's something done in different ways all over the world.

Do you know what I'd love to see? An art show, at the Dreamland, of contemporary ofrendas created by local artists (non-Mexican or Mexican), springboarding from the Mexican tradition and honoring departed people they knew. It might be a really intense and interesting show. And there's still time to scramble it together in time for the Dia de los Muertos (Nov. 1 and/or 2).
