It is very interesting to note that parade organizers let the "chickens in Ypsi" gentleman march.

Talk about controversial.

This is the issue that ignited furor on the blog and caused one resident to declare that if this were approved, she'd "march right down to City Hall" to demand it be quashed.

It was the subject of one of the questions given the mayoral candidates at last winter's debate at EMU organized by Mark Maynard and friends. The income tax was another debate question.

Both issues merited a debate question because both issues were "hot" in the community. In other words, politically controversial.

Why was the chicken-promoting gentleman allowed to march, but not SCIT?

Ypsidixit always works on third-Saturdays (proofreading day) but her spy reports this:

Steve and SCIT were in the parade. They gathered where their spot would have been, between #43 and #45. But not too early. When the parade started, Steve zipped up roll alongside one guy carrying a Historic East(?) Side Neighborhood association sign. When the parade reached Huron and Cross, he was no longer there. But he and the rest of the SCIT group showed up near the end. But not at the end.

In addition to the 'controversial' topic of income taxes and "urban chickens," I witnessed people carrying signs promoting unionism and breast-feeding! Shocking! Was everyone in the Heritage Festival Steering Committee asleep at the switch this year? Surely by next year the Committee will set things aright - we will have a "pure" and completely controversy-free parade consisting of the Mayor and City Council, fire trucks, and Mickey Mouse. My daughters walked with us holding signs and displaying SCIT buttons. Afterwards I reminded them that they had just witnessed (and participated in) one of the most important acts any American can perform - the upholding of our US Constitution. The First Amendment and our freedom of expression is no longer quite as abstract a concept for them (and me) as it once was. Thank you to everyone who worked to organize this, and to those who stepped in and offered assistance and a replacement place in the parade.

Unionism and breastfeeding, not to mention urban chickens, are every bit as controversial as a city income tax.

Kudos to you for involving young people in an exercise of free speech. Shame on those who sought to suppress this most American of rights.
