I didn't get a chance to see the news last night, so I missed Forrest breaking the law on camera. If anyone happened to record the broadcast, I would appreciate it if I could borrow it. I really have mixed feelings on this issue, and I wouldnt be opposed to the law for adults, but children riding in the road on Cross or Michigan Ave wont work. In Depot town it isnt that much of a problem because it is only a couple of blocks, but riding a bike through downtown is another issue. Forrest likes to ride downtown to go to the rocket and vg kids. I get nervous with him crossing Michigan Ave much less riding in traffic.

Jim, Fritz and I watched raptly and we thought Forrest broke the law with grace and style.

I looked on the WXYZ Channel 7 website for a copy of the video, and used the search box to search for it, but didn't find it. Hm.

Crossing Michigan is indeed a dicey proposition, even for adults. Heaven forbid that kids ride in traffic there--with the giant median, there's no spare room for bikes at all.

How will making the robbers ride in the street "crack down on illegal activities"???? *boggle*

You can walk your bikes on the sidewalks of Michigan Ave. and in Depot Town. I don't think the cops are advocating riding them in the streets there, because it IS dangerous. As for the illegal activities Anisoptera asks about, it's very easy to ride toward a woman carrying a purse, snatch it and be gone. Also, some bike riders are shaking down walkers, especially younger walkers, for whatever valuables they have. Once again, it's considerably faster to make a getaway on a bike. So, that's just a couple of ways I can see where bike riders on the sidewalks are a potential problem. I resent the police having to enforce this crackdown and they aren't real happy about it, either. But, right now, it's necessary. Ypsidixit, your comments are right on target.

Shaking down walkers? Man, oh man. Talk about pathetic.

My impression is that no one including the police is terribly happy about it, but it gives the police a big advantage in that they can now apprehend someone if they're breaking the sidewalk law. My impression is that formerly, they couldn't nab someone they *knew* just stole something if he chucked it in a bush somewhere...so off goes the thief, to return in 5 minutes for the hidden skillsaw. This way the police can nab people they suspect just stole something.
